Hey everyone,
If you, like me, feel like you are already spending too much time on social media this election year, I have a proposal for you. Let’s try to spend some of that time reading books instead. It’ll be good for us.
As a side project to our regular insights and analysis briefings, we’re starting a Democracy Book Club.
Every month, we’ll pick a book, read it together and then invite the author to come talk (or argue) with us about it. On Zoom (but who knows, maybe someday in person). No need to join every month, just when you can. And, like any book club, you can probably get away with not reading the book — but shhh, don’t tell.
Feel free to invite your friends.
We’ll pick authors from the left, right and center of the pro-democracy coalition with the goal of a healthy and democratic discourse (we want books that will challenge and hone our thinking). Feel free to send us book suggestions: digital@protectdemocracy.org. Discussion open to all. We’ll see how it goes, ask for your feedback and if it’s not useful, we’ll stop.

First up, in May, we’re going to read the brand-new Minority Rule by Ari Berman.
As Mother Jones' national voting rights correspondent, Ari has been covering free & fair elections since long before it was a major beat. And his new book digs back through decades to understand what he calls “the long history of the conflict between white supremacy and multiracial democracy that has reached a fever pitch today — while also telling the inspiring story of resistance to these regressive efforts.”
Discussion with Ari on May 22 at 12PM ET / 9AM PT, register to get the link.

Oh, one final thing. We’ll mention the next month’s book/author discussion in the weekly briefing going forward, but after today we’ll only send separate invite emails to people who have opted in to Insights, our “bonus content” feed.
If you’d like to get those invites, opt in to Insights here:
Just hit the button and change your notification settings. (Or if you don’t want them, opt out.)
See you on the 22nd,
-Ben
