We got the good news America desperately needed last night: an undeniable repudiation of the authoritarian faction that controlled every lever of the federal government with disastrous results.
Americans turned out in exceptional numbers to reject rampant corruption and save our democracy, which were top voting issues in the 2026 midterm cycle. Voters could plainly see how a lack of guardrails on an out-of-control president led to terrible outcomes for the economy, government services, and basic personal freedoms.
Midterms often check the party in power, but this was off the charts. Other presidents have weathered inflation, high gas prices, and foreign conflicts without facing this kind of collapse. This wasn’t a normal midterm rebalancing — it was a total rejection of the authoritarian philosophy that has defined this administration. And it happened up and down the ticket, all across the country.
The margins were too big to rig
This outcome didn’t happen by accident; it’s the result of years of meticulous planning, broad-tent cooperation, and relentless grassroots organizing by a united pro-democracy coalition. From day one, “No Kings” protesters recognized the power of organizing early and often with a unifying message: An autocrat with full control of the federal government was an urgent danger to the country that was antithetical to our founding principles.
The message from the get-go was unambiguous: These midterms had to be too big to rig. We needed massive, historic margins across the country so that bad actors couldn’t simply overturn the outcome in one convenient precinct or courtroom.
The pro-democracy coalition foresaw every dirty trick in the authoritarian election playbook — from ICE intimidation, to the harassment of political opponents, to redistricting, to ballot seizures, to voter data grabs — and spent months organizing, litigating, and building firewalls to neutralize them in advance. Specifically, Protect Democracy identified authoritarian strategies, explained how they would unfold in Trump’s second term, and strategized how to counter their plans to deceive voters, disrupt elections, and deny unfavorable midterm results.
Then, on election night, the threat that Republicans would try to overturn the election results seemed to vanish. But make no mistake, that is only because millions of people worked overtime behind the scenes to head off disaster. Like Y2K, a catastrophe didn’t fail to materialize because the danger was fake; it didn’t materialize because dedicated people did the unglamorous, exhausting work to avert it. We are incredibly thankful for everyone’s dedication to that cause.
Now we have the opportunity for new, lasting work.
This incoming majority has a mandate for total accountability: Dismantle the tools of executive overreach, root out systemic corruption, and enact reforms so no future strongman can drag us through this nightmare again.
We won the night — now we make sure we never go back.
