I truly appreciate all of their concerns, I feel those concerns are mine as well, our young people need a voice and we definitely need more young people holding public office of any kind, However I have attended 5 protests since the beginning of the year and 2 town halls and I can tell you, young people are absent from these events so it does make me wonder how concerned or interested they are in our country's future. I don't mean this to be a negative statement, just an observation.
Young people here never lived with a functional federal government where parties disagreed but worked together on important issues...the environment, civil rights, infrastructure. Since Newt Gingrich and the Tea Party, Republicans have been intractably obstructive with the stated goal to destroy bi-partisanship and democracy. No wonder young people are confused about democracy's value.
I have two Gen Z sons as well as nieces and nephews who are part of this critical generation. We must listen to their concerns!!! They are the future and our role, especially as baby boomers ( as an older mom, I am a boomer) is to be there as mentors.
Too many older adults are too jealous of their power and money and 4 bedroom homes to want to share their wealth with the new generation. That wealth is also composed of knowledge, experience and wisdom after years of navigating the challenges that faced our generations.
We need to interact as much as possible across generational lines so they know they can trust us to have their backs.
You should write "uninterested" rather than "disinterested" which properly means not having "interests" of a conflicting kind - ie "disinterested justice" - impartial and to be valued.
I'm over 50 and have 2 children that are productive citizens but they are not activist...yet. They are just trying to keep their heads above the water but if this chaos continues they will find ways to stand up for democracy. My son is in 3rd year of med school which is challenging and exhausting in its own right and on top of that has had research funding taken away. We all need to help each other and stand together and create a strong united voice to be heard.

Just a quick note to say how much we appreciate this report and excellent work by friends at Protect Democracy and CIRCLE. It was part of our inspiration for this post: https://thecivicscenter.substack.com/p/pro-democracy-americans-want-to-push
