“When lawyers operate under intimidation — sacrificing principles to avoid becoming targets — the system of checks and balances and the rule of law weakens.” - The rather rapid sacrifice of “principles” by so many law firms suggests that many top lawyers don’t have real admirable principles.
In a way, the collective action problem is a central reason for our political dysfunction. I hope this lawsuit spurs other organizations to work together.
I'm a lawyer who reacted to the administration's attacks on big law firms by joining the ABA, in the hope it would lead the fight to preserve the independence of lawyers and law firms. (Membership in the ABA, unlike membership in state bar associations, is voluntary, and most lawyers forgo the expense.) In this suit I see that I spent my membership dues well. Hallelujah!
Are there any legal ramifications for a lawyer who was coerced into defending the administration to not do his / her best work on the case? If I were Trump, I’d not want the legal services that I coerced someone to do. So much for the art of the deal…
I think this is the moment I have been waiting for since Trump took office.
The logic is here. My thoughts are confused, but I think we can do this. We need the support of all Americans, majority the ABA deserves our attention and applause for becoming the social standard of change. I think I will reread this note several times before I can explain it to others and I’m not an attorney, but I know several thank you it just the idea of Trump winning so much just seemed too much! And it turns out it was thank you again.
A very encouraging action, in a world turned upside down.
